Ukraine International Airlines: new check in fee

A fee of €15 will be applied with immediate effect for long-haul flights for printing boarding cards at airport check in.

Passengers requesting printed boarding cards when checking in at Ukraine International Airlines will have to pay a €15 fee from now on. This amount will only be charged if the passenger has not checked in using the online or mobile check in service and requires a print out from check in staff. Flights from Beijing and all group bookings are exempt.

As a general point, we recommend checking in online in advance whatever the airline, if it is technically possible

Joint use of Miles & More miles

The new Miles & More Mileage Pooling scheme allows members to share miles with family and friends.

Up to two adults and five children can contribute miles to a mileage pool and obtain rewards faster. All of the award miles collected by pool members are combined. While children can still redeem their miles themselves, only the nominated adults can redeem miles from the pool. The system automatically allocates miles according to their expiry date. Protected miles are only redeemed when unprotected miles are insufficient for the desired award. Members with frequent flyer status can continue to use pooled miles to obtain frequent flyer benefits, such as the Companion Award.

US-Entry: USA tightens controls on powdered substances

The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) introduced the new powder rule on 30 June 2018.

The new rule means that powdered substances with a volume of more than 350ml in hand luggage will be subjected to more thorough screening on all flights to the USA. If inspectors cannot clearly establish what the powder is, it will be confiscated. US carriers such as American Airlines are therefore advising passengers to pack cosmetics, spices, protein powder and other powder-like substances of over 350ml in their checked luggage and not in their carry-on bags.

This advice does not apply to flights departing from the USA or US territories, as the TSA has already introduced improved processes at its security checkpoints.

Qatar Airways: A350 for flights to Vienna

Qatar Airways has introduced the modern A350 on its Doha to Vienna route, enhancing both capacity and on-board comfort.

For its summer timetable, an A350 XWB will be in service on the route alongside the B787 Dreamliner. Introduction of the A350 will add 14 more business class seats and 15 more seats in economy on Qatar Airways flights from Vienna. Comfort will also be improved thanks to the more generous seat configuration. Wider seats in business and economy, the quietest engines in the industry, an innovative air circulation system and LED mood lighting set new standards in aircraft comfort. Business class seats are arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration, so that every passenger has direct access to the aisle. Each seat reclines into a 180-degree flat bed and is equipped with a 17-inch HD touchscreen.
